Pfäfflobook

Book Design, Bookbinding, Print

January 2014

As a student project, this book had the purpose of opening a new talent to the world. Each had to find a designer to make a book about. This one demonstrates posters of a very well-known in Switzerland graphic designer Felix Pfäffli. The layout, color palette, decorative and functional elements, and the size of the book – everything is based on poster design.

Interactive Publication

Book Design, Bookbinding

November 2018

The switchover from analog to digital media is one of the most significant and interesting processes of modern graphic design, which has affected all areas of visual communication. There are imperfections in the usability of analog and digital publications as to how we interact with design works, which allows for an incredibly interesting field of research. One of the broadest fields of visual communication in the field of publication. It includes a large number of different designs and artistic disciplines such as illustration, typography, photography, layout, paper engineering, and many others connected not only to analog issues but to digital ones as well. It also presents a variety of information, which makes up the actual publications. The content of the text not only determines the appearance of the publication but also predicts how the interaction will occur between the text, the publication, and its readers. As Jan Tschichold noticed, a person comes across different types of publications and the information it contains throughout his or her life. The publication itself also changes and develops throughout an individual’s life. People are first confronted with publications in the form of ABC alphabet books and picture books, and later with scientific books, books of fiction, and newspapers. Since Tschichold’s time, digital publications have become a standard existing side by side with analog ones. In general, visual communication uses the same methods: the only difference being in its way of interacting with the media of a specific publication. The process of choosing between a digital or analog issue is not always easy. Users need some additional knowledge and practice. As the experience in a digital sphere is trying hard to imitate the analog experience, the gap between them is narrowing, which makes the users’ choice easier and more familiar. On the other hand, there is the problem of focusing while reading. For the younger generation, this problem is more pronounced. The intended interaction with a publication strives to hold their attention for a longer period to make the experience of reading more meaningful. An important inquiry into this research is to identify forms of interaction within different contexts of visual communication and to divide basic types of interaction to compare any interactivity between analog and digital publications. Distinguishing between types of interaction is not only important to users but also designers, as it may open a wider range of possibilities to design interaction between users and information. This study refers to scientific experiments within the field of psychology and compares findings to experiments by artists who observe the behavior of individuals when interacting with their art. The topics covered in this study include reflections on our learning process, perception, and consciousness – all within the discourse on interactive design.

Flatland

Book Design, Book Binding, Illustration, Silkscreen, Paper Engineering

January 2018

Based on the research about interaction in digital and analog media, this book was made to illustrate different kinds of interaction in a printed book. By the text of Edwin Ebbot, the book divides into two parts. The first one is completely flat, and it is being illustrated by ''flat'' methods of interaction, whether the second part shows literal illustrations when the third dimension pops up.

Straw Gold

Book Design

January 2017

This work is made for the book competition for the exhibition Stroh Gold in a Basel Cultural Museum. The exhibition addresses different themes, such as upcycling, fashion, religious interrelationships, and stories of global economic entanglement, through to rites of passage. The concept of this book is based on bilingualism. To read the french version, one needs to cut out one rope, and for the german version – cut another. This moment of rotation symbolizes recycling and up-cycling, which is the main idea of the exhibition itself. The value of the transformed things is emphasized by gold silkscreen printing. To show the precious videos, kindly collected by the exhibitors, I included stickers with a part of the picture and QR codes, so everyone has access to them.

I Like To Move It

Book Design, Research

December 2016

“I Like To Move It” is a research work about the animated poster as a trend in graphic design. The main goal was to go through the history of animation, finding out why it is getting so popular. What kind of features make an animated poster such a strong part of visual communications, which benefits designers may get in the nearest future? Every research is an ongoing process. A combination of the most interesting and playful things in graphic design made me form dry research into a funny little book that shows a real face of an animated poster. It does exactly so much action as an animated poster itself.

Full / Empty

Book Design, Composition

June 2017

Limitations in design turning a work process into a puzzle-solving. Two anonyms, two opposite colors, dots and lines, specific typeface – are only the easiest evidence. Even the composition should work as a single, fully finished piece. Later on, it becomes a part of a publication. This book is a project curated by Prof. Philipp Stamm and Jinsu Ahn. The main goal is to tell a story on 12 spreads. This one is about full and empty states, their transitions in terms of space, basic forms, and typography rules. Opposites, similarities, text, tone and storytelling, in a propedeutic composition, are making this book an outstanding puzzle of graphic design.

Coding Party

Events, Poster Design

December 2018

Some time ago, my friends and I understood that we needed more time to learn to code, so during our schooling, the only way to find time was to plan an event and promise each other to come. And of course, that thing needed an invitational poster. As we find out, quick posters work the best. After a while, the topic was changed from “coding” to “we do whatever we need and do it together”.
